If compared with other books like Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck this book has less violence or at least the type which does not pinch the heart very much. Cannery Row happens to be the point of action in this novel which has humor and some emotionally charged moments that never lead to a big tragedy.
